The Congress observed the first anniversary of the demonetisation as “Black Day” on Wednesday.
Hundreds of party activists led by PCC president Prasad Harichandan held a protest rally here. The all wore black stripes in protest against the demonetisation that banned Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 old currency notes a year back on this day.
They moved in the rally from the Congress Bhavan to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) office via Ram Mandir and Housing Board Square and held a meeting there.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while announcing ban of high value currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 from circulation, had asserted to eliminate black money and fake note circulation and to put a curb on terror funding. But all these claims have proved wrong and the intention of the Modi Government has been exposed,” said Harichandan.
He lamented saying the demonetisation of high value currency notes has caused great distress to the common man of the country. He remarked that the GDP of the country could shrink by two percentage-points due to the “wrong” move of the Centre.
Among others, AICC General Secretary and Odisha-in-charge BK Hari Prasad and many Senior Congress leaders were present.
