In a bid to avert communal violence on New Year, the police had performed a flag march on Thursday with armed police cadres marching on the Dasaharapada road and Masjid area of the town.
On Wednesday night, some mischievous elements from a community had tried to create tension in the Pathan street area by attacking Muslim community people. At about 12 pm, certain elements belonging to Dasarapada pelted bricks at the Masjid and damaged lights decorated on the eve of Milad-un-Nabi, the birthday of Prophets Mohammed. When the Muslim community people protested, these elements began assaulting them and used abusive language.
The Masjid committee lodged an FIR at the Town police station and also reported the matter to district SP Parul Gupta. They also demanded compensation of the losses incurred in the incident.
Town police station IIC Ramesh Bisoyi, along with staff rushed to Dasaharapada and arrested four culprits. Four platoons of police were deployed in both the affected areas, said SDPO Bimal Kumar Brahma.
