The Commissionerate police on Saturday managed to nab Debasish Mukherjee alleged to be the mastermind in the kidnapping of an engineering student from the Jagamara area under the Khandagiri police station in the city on October 2.
Earlier, six persons including two engineering college students had been arrested in connection with the kidnapping of engineering student Anuj Jha for a ransom of Rs 10 lakh. The accused had bundled the victim into a car and went to a number of places. When they were returning to the city, the police nabbed them and rescued Anuj.
Police sources said Debasish was rounded up while he was frequently changing his location between the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.
Police claim that Debasish’s wife, who is also one of the key accused in connection with the kidnapping, is still absconding.
Both Debasish and his wife had played a crucial role in the abduction of Anuj Jha.
Meanwhile, Debasish will be interrogated to ascertain the motive behind the kidnapping, whether any other people are involved in planning and executing the crime.
DCP Satyabrat Bhoi said Debasish had some dispute with Anuj over financial matters and he is now being interrogated.
“Preliminary investigations reveals that the kidnapping was over some financial dispute and only after interrogation of Debasish is complete, the truth would be unearthed,” said Bhoi.
