CHSE drags feet on +2 course on CBSE pattern

The decision taken by the Higher Education Department at a review meeting two years back to revamp the syllabi and examination pattern at the Plus Two level in line with the Central

Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has been hanging fire since then under red tape. As a result, only a handful of students are managing to get selected from the State in the all-India entrance tests like IITs.

Sources said the syllabi committee of the CHSE has failed in its effort to bring in changes to the syllabi. Moreover, senior professors who prepare textbooks in accordance with the prescribed syllabi are unable to prepare textbooks of a standard that would help students perform better at all-India examinations.

Students in institutions affiliated to the CHSE have not performed well in comparison to their counterparts in the CBSE and ICSE patterns.

According to Odisha Joint Entrance Examination (OJEE) Chairman Tusharkant Nath, whenever there have been discussions on the poor performance of students from the State in all-India examinations, it has been proposed to adopt the CBSE curricula and impart of lessons on the CBSE pattern. But it is yet to be implemented.

On the other hand, according to CHSE Chairman Prof Basudev Chhattoi, the CHSE is still discussing the issue and no decision has yet been taken. The issue would be discussed threadbare at the next examination committee meeting. The CHSE’s inability to adopt the CBSE pattern is due to the time-table of the colleges.

It would be difficult to implement the CBSE pattern in view of various functions, college union elections, holidays, shortage and qualification of teachers, etc., he said.
