Chit fund: CBI told to expedite Seashore probe

PNS

The Supreme Court on Monday asked the CBI to expedite its probe and filing of chargesheets in the chit fund scam cases against Odisha’s Seashore group of companies.

“CBI shall expedite the investigation and filing of chargesheets where it has not been done,” an SC Bench comprising Justices TS Thakur and C Nagappan said. Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar, appearing for the CBI, said in 17 cases against the group, the local police have already filed chargesheets, and now the probe agency is looking into 21 other matters. It was alleged by the investors that as many as 44 FIRs were pending against the group, and the CBI was not doing the needful.

Disposing of some investors’ pleas seeking a direction to the CBI to take up probe in all the 44 scam cases against the group, the court said the CBI is “cognisant” of the facts and would take steps. The SC had on May 9 last year ordered the CBI probe into the chit fund scam cases in West Bengal, Odisha and Assam.
