Chief Minister urged for Varsity tag to CETB

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has been urged to upgrade the College of Engineering and Technology (CET), a Government engineering college based in the city to a Unitary University.

The students and alumni in a memorandum to the Chief Minister said that after upgradation, the institution may be named “Odisha Technological University, Bhubaneswar (OTUB)”.

The memorandum said CET despite having a distinct record of academic achievement is just considered another engineering college of the scores available in the State under the BPUT. With getting elevated to the status of a varsity, the CET can give a further boost to its academic achievements. Besides, it would help the institution grow with funds from various quarters.

The current and old students of the CET gave the memorandum against the backdrop of a proposal with the State Government to upgrade IGIT, Sarang and CET, Bhubaneswar, into Unitary Varsities.

A four-member committee has already submitted a feasibility report in favour of the CET.

The memorandum claimed that the CET will have several advantages if it gets the varsity tag such as independent decisions in respect of academic, administration and financial matters, new advanced and industry oriented courses and research facilities, timely examination, result declaration, getting certificate, funds from UGC and research projects from different funding agencies and funds under Rastriya Uchhatar Sikhya Abhijan (RUSA). Besides, academic quality will get a fillip while students can get better recognition, among other benefits.
