Chair in Kapilendra Deva’s name demanded

PNS

A function was held near the Lingaraj Temple in the city on Saturday to mark the coronation anniversary of the 15th-century monarch Kapiladendra Deva.

The event was organised by a young history enthusiast and heritage writer of city Sibasish Mahapatra along with the Green Cross Society.

Mahapatra said it is unfortunate that Gajapati Kapilendra Deva’s name doesn’t appear in list of the famous rulers of the country in a majority of history textbooks. Kapilendra was one of the most powerful kings of medieval India and ruled from river Ganga till the southernmost point of the country. He was a great promoter of Odia language.

Mahapatra and many other Odia history and culture lovers have requested the State Government to establish chairs in the name of Kapilendra Deva in the universities of the State and also to celebrate the monarch’s coronation anniversary as a State event.
