In the wake of mushrooming of private coaching centres, the Union Government has asked the State Government to put in place a legal framework to regulate such institutions and protect students from spending exorbitant fees.

Most of the coaching centres are not registered under the Government regulation.

Recent fire incident in a coaching centre in Gujarat that resulted in death of a number of students has raised alarm in national level, and the Union Government is concerned over  the matter.

Similarly, several cases of malpractices have been reported in Media and the issue has been highlighted in various forums, debates and discussions.

“It has come to fore that some of the Coaching Centres are operating in school level also.

These institutions are needed to be regulated through an appropriate legal framework,” said a senior officer in the State Government.

The Justice Roopanwal Commission, set up by the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) to address the issue of student suicides, has advised the universities to evolve a grievance regressal mechanism through which students can lodge complaints in events of excesses committed by universities.

The grievance mechanism will also help students grow academically.

The Ashok Misra Committee Report had advised that the IITs set up a system for developing mock JEE examinations which will help students prepare for the

JEE significantly and wean them away from the coaching industry.

Considering that Regulation of Plus II level Education is the responsibility of the State Government, The MHRD has specifically urged the State administration to regulate Plus Two level coaching centres under a legal framework.

MHRD Additional Secretary SS Sandhu has advised the State Government to take immediate steps in the larger interest of the students and their overall development, said official sources.
