Finally, the CBI managed to arrest a fraudster wanted in a cheating case after 22 years from Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh. The accused was identified as Tarapad Mukherjee.
Sources said the CBI was on the trail of Mukherjee from 1995 in connection with a cheating case. During the first phase of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) modernisation from 1991 to 1995, Mukherjee had bagged a contract for supplying equipments.
But later it was found that the materials supplied by him of were very low quality. Following which the case was handed over it CBI for investigations.
During investigations by the Central investigating agency it was ascertained that Mukherjee had no manufacturing company of his own but he was carrying out business registering fake companies.
After inquiry, CBI lodged a case on January 19, 1995 against Mukherjee. As the accused absconded CBI could not arrest him. In 2006, the Special CBI court declared him as an absconder.
During the probe it was revealed that after Mukherjee absconded he had worked in different companies of New Delhi and Mumbai under assumed names to hide his identity.
