Honour killing is the ugliest of crimes being reported often from across the country. Mostly, parents kill their own wards, especially daughters, who marry to opposites belonging to other castes. If caste problem is weeded out from the society, there would be no honour killing at all, opined eminent columnist Adhyapak Biswaranjan.
Speaking at a seminar on ‘Steps Needed for Elimination of Honour-killing from the soil of Odisha: from the soil of India’ on Thursday, Biswaranjan said love, humanism and fellow feelings can help the society to remove caste feelings. He said these can be practiced majorly through education.
The AMOFOI organised the seminar to mark the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister Nandini Satpathy.
Child writer Dash Benhur said people’s mind set needs to be changed in the society. “If we will not focus on casteism, the rate of honour killing will certainly decrease,” he added.
Retired Political Science Prof Dr KP Padhy said proper education is necessary to change the mentalities of the people so that they would not believe on casteism. There should be a subject on humanism and human values in educational institutions, he added.
A book Swarga Nahin, Narka Nahin: Devapeeth Jiba KahinIJ was released on the occasion.
“We must work for the safety and security of lovers. That is the important way of breaking the backbone of the caste system,” said AMOFOI secretary B Ramchandra CST Voltaire.
Among others, Campaign for Electoral Reforms in India, Odisha Chapter chief Manas Jena, columnist Tusar Kanta and former IAS Kalyan Ray spoke.
