The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has registered a case on the tragic incident of B Yakub, a school student who has been struggling for life after being electrocuted while he was employed as a labourer by a contractor for construction of a road under Pradhan Mantri Gramya Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) in Malkangiri district.
Supreme Court lawyer and rights activist Radhakanta Tripathy registered the petition at the commission urging it to direct the State Government to immediately extend appropriate treatment free-of-cost to the child, his rehabilitation and adequate compensation.
He also requested the commission to take strict action against the errant officials found responsible.
The petitioner alleged that the victim, a Class IX student of IMST School and son of Buka Samsan of Christian Sahi at Korukand block has been critically injured and struggling for life after losing his hand by electrocution, while working as a daily wager under PMGSY scheme.
“Even though he studies well, he could not get uniform to wear for school due to acute poverty.
The negligence on the part of the School and Mass Education and the department concerned executing the PMGSY contributed to this severe human rights
violation,” Radhakanta alleged.
