A pair of lacquer dolls will tie knot akin to human beings here on May 14. The aim is not just fun and frolic but popularization of the indigenous lacquer art of the district. For past several years, such an event is being held with much fanfare here.

Buoyed over the success and response by last year’s marriage, the organisers are making hectic preparations to hold the event in a much better way this year. “The main objective is to revive the lacquer works which has been indigenous craft of Baleswar. We have been emerging successful in our mission as we are finding participation in more and more numbers,” said artist and principal organiser Kesu Das.

This year, Integrated Test Range Additional Director Dr BK Das would play the role of the father of the bride doll, while PHD assistant engineer Ashok Mohapatra would play the role of father of the bridegroom.

Dr Das said, “The lagna Sthirakruta ceremony was held on Monday as per all the rituals.  The defence colony residents as well as the culture lover   people of Baleswar participated in the date fixing programme with a great enthusiasm.”

Organizer Brahmanath Rath said, “Every year symbolic names as per mythology or history were given to the pair of dolls and this year the names given are Purosattam Dev (groom) and Padmabati (bride).”
