Even though the enforcement agencies have recently launched a crackdown on drug dealers and peddlers, the drug trade continues unabated in the twin cities and its adjacent areas.
In an example, the Quick Action Team (QAT) of the Commissionerate police and Jatni police on Tuesday arrested two brown sugar peddlers at Badatota BSF Camp Chhak in Jatni and seized 22 grams of brown sugar from their possession.
The accused were identified as Sangram Keshari Das (30) and Meghalaya Mallick (29). Police have also seized cash of Rs 9,400 and two motorcycles from the possession of the accused.
Police said the accused claimed to have procured the contraband from Jaleswar in Baleswar district. “We are further investigating to verify their antecedents. We are also interrogating them to ascertain the involvement of any racket in brown sugar peddling,” said a police official.
