Even though the Commissionerate police and the Excise Department have seized brown sugar and rounded a number of drug peddlers in more than a dozen cases, the trade in contraband continues unabated in the city. In a glaring example, police on Sunday arrested two drug peddlers near the Jharpada over-bridge and seized brown sugar worth lakhs of rupees from their possession.
Acting on a tipoff, police raided the spot and nabbed the two youths. Sources said brown sugar weighing over 20 gram was recovered from the duos possession. Besides, police also recovered Rs 5,000 cash from them. Sources said the accused persons were in police custody and their identities were yet to be revealed. The unabated flow of contraband to the city has not only put up a challenge for the police and excise officials but has also become a matter of concern for the denizens.
