Welcoming the Odisha Electricity Regulatory Commission’s order to cancel the power distribution licences of Wesco, Nesco and Southco (all run by the Reliance Infra), the Mahanagar Nagarik Manch here has demanded that the entire power sector be brought under complete Government ownership.
Manch convenor Chittaranjan Mohanty and Khsirod Rout shared the view that the OERC’s decision would save 43 lakh electricity consumers of the State from being exploited by private distribution companies. The Government should also completely ban private investment in the health, education, transport and communication sectors.
The body also demanded that the Government take steps to recover crores of rupees gulped by several private companies and reduce the present electricity tariff by 50 per cent.
