'Breastfeed newborn immediately after birth'

PNS

A newborn baby needs to be breastfed immediately after birth, speakers at a five-day workshop, organised to create awareness at the IMS and SUM Hospital here to mark the World Breastfeeding Week, said.

“Earlier, the baby was breastfed an hour after birth; and in case it was a case of caesarean section, the baby was fed after four hours. But now, things have changed,” Dr Jagadish P Sahu, Head of Neonatology in the hospital, said. “Now, the baby is fed in the delivery room itself. The baby remains active for about 30 minutes after birth and then goes to sleep. So, we are asking mothers to breastfeed the baby immediately,” he said.

Altogether 220 nurses, faculty members and medical students were trained in the process of breastfeeding during the workshop.
