Even five months after the retrieve of a body with handcuffs in its hands from Brahmani river near Saranga, the deceased is yet to be identified.
The Parjang police had recovered the body with tied hands on June 9, 2013. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked for an inquiry report from the State police.
The NHRC has ordered the Director General of Police to submit a report within six weeks on what steps have been taken to identify the deceased. Sangeeta Swain, secretary of Angul-based Human Rights Watch, had taken up the issue with the NHRC. From the preliminary inquiry police suspected it to be a murder case which the perpetrators tried to hush up by throwing the body into the river.
The complainant has urged the Commission to order a thorough probe into the incident and has demanded compensation of `10 lakh for the family of the deceased. Dhenkanal SP Manoranjan Mohanty said that he has not yet received any communiqué in this regard from the NHRC. “However, the Crime Branch has been informed to dispatch the photo of the deceased to different police stations for identification,” he said.
