The residents of Ashok Nagar and Cooperative Colony have threatened to resort to an agitation, if the basic civic amenities in their localities are not provided by the Brahmapur Municipal Corporation (BMC), sources said.
The local residents of these two areas have long been demanding for supply of adequate drinking water, construction of new roads, renovation of existing roads and installation of informative sign boards at the threshold of each lane for identification, but their demands have so far gone unheeded.
The condition of roads in these two areas is deplorable with a large number of potholes, making them dangerous to walk.
Similarly, the drains are totally defunct with dumps of garbage choking them, while filth is also found mounting up in size along the roads as the civic body is not careful to dispose it. During rain, the drain water flows on the road in many parts of the city and even enters into the residential houses.
The situation in Gandhinagar area, one of the posh localities in the city under the BMC, is equally alarming. The road from the house of Badri Das up to Gandhinagar 3rd line Extension, connecting the Post Office in South and the house of Abhimanyu Mohanty to the North, is worse as it is full of potholes, debris, wild plants, mud, solid wastes, polythene, and garbage causing serious inconvenience to the residents of the area.
According to information available, out of two small roads of roughly 200 meters each, the work order for one though has already been issued, but no work has yet been started. The District Administration, enquiring officers of the World Bank and the WHO, the officials of the Urban Development Ministry are being misled about the road and hygiene condition of the city. These officials are shown only those few designated areas which are in good condition during their visit to the city for stocktaking.
