The State BJP on Friday sought intervention of the National Tribal Commission into the alleged failure of the State Government in the implementation of tribal welfare schemes of the Union Government. “Due to non-implementation of welfare schemes, tribals of Odisha are not only being deprived of benefits but also being exploited by private agencies,” the BJP alleged in memorandum submitted to the commission. A team led by the party’s State general secretary Ananta Nayak met National Tribal Commissioner Nanda Kumar Sai and submitted the memorandum. The party alleged that the Union Tribal Affairs Ministry had announced 24 minor forest produces in two years (2014-2016) for livelihood of tribals and directed all States to implement them. But these minor forest produces are not being collected from the tribals and minimum support prices are not being paid to them. The party alleged that the State Tribal Welfare Department has been able to spend Rs 3 crore against sanctioned amount of Rs 70 crore.
