It was a free for all at a Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) council meeting here on Saturday when ruling BJD and opposition Congress corporators indulged in vandalism using water bottles, glasses and paperweights as missiles.
Trouble began when Congress members raised the issue of faulty identification of beneficiaries in the city to get digitised ration cards for subsidised food grains under the Notational Food Security Act.
Seeking an immediate discussion on the matter, they alleged that many genuine beneficiaries are left out in the list that contains many disputable names owning allegiance to the ruling party. Reacting over it, the BJD members countered their Congress ciunterparts terming them “corrupt”.
While some BJD and Congress members were engaged in heated exchanges of words, water bottles, glasses and paper weights were hurled at each other and pandemonium prevailed disrupting the monthly council meeting of the civic body.
“Appropriate actions shall be taken against those damaging public properties,” said Mayor Anita Behera.
While nearly two lakh people in the city had applied for getting the ration cards, only 65,000 have been identified to get the same leaving out many genuine beneficiaries from the list. “We will look into the allegations and rectify the list in next three months,” said CMC Commissioner Gyana Das.
