A few days after the State Government announced a relaxation in the implementation of the amended Motor Vehicles Act for three months, a motorcyclist was fined a hefty Rs 22,500 for traffic rule violation in Balangir district on Sunday.
Sushant Kumar Meher, who was riding the bike, was intercepted at Kuruli Chhak on the outskirts of Kantabanji town by a joint team of Regional Transport Office (RTO) and police personnel.
Meher allegedly argued with the officials over the traffic checking. Later, he was handed a challan for Rs 22,500 over multiple traffic rule violations.
The RTO issued him challans of Rs 500 for general offence, Rs 2,000 for disobeying orders of the enforcement agency, Rs 5,000 for failing to produce a valid driving licence, Rs 5, 000 for rash driving and Rs 10,000 for drunken driving.
Later, the Kantabanji police detained Meher and seized his bike as he refused to pay the fine.
Notably, on September 9, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had announced a relaxation on traffic enforcement for a period of three months following public outrage over heavy fine under the newly amended Motor Vehicles Act.
