A 20-year-old girl committed suicide by consuming tablets after her boyfriend spurned her marriage proposal. The Kendrapada Town police seized the deceased girl’s mobile phone and some chloroquine tables from her and detained a youth in this connection.
According to Kendrapada SP Satish Kumar Gajabhiye, one Mitali Sahu of Kalapathar was found laying on the main road near the Kajala petrol pump in a critical condition on Thursday. Though she was admitted in the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH), she died later in the night. Going through the girl’s mobile calls and recordings, the police came to know that Mitali had taken the extreme steps after her boyfriend Kabiraj Nayak of Dhenkanal district’s Rasalo village spurned her marriage proposal after keeping illicit relationship with her for several years. According to Gajabhiye, the girl had love affairs with Kabiraj, who is a distant relative of her, since childhood when Kabiraj along with his brother Debraj was operating a garage at her native village in Khordha. Kabiraj had kept physical relation many times.
later, Kabiraj spurned the marriage proposal when Mitali’s family placed a marriage proposal with him. Even, Kabiraj’s family demanded a sum of Rs2 lakh for accepting her as their daughter-in-law.On December 16, Mitali met Kabiraj after receiving a telephone call from him. But Kabiraj once again rejected her proposal. Subsequently, Mitali telephoned to Debaraj and informed him that she would soon consume 10 cloroquine tablets to kill herself. On Friday, Mitali’s mother lodged an FIR at the Kendrapada Town Police Station alleging that her daughter was killed by Kabiraj and his family members. The police detained Debaraj and the investigation is on, said the SP.
