Below-par water conservation pits dug in Baleswar

Ubachak Mohanty

Allegations are galore that casual initiatives have been taken for construction of water reservation pits in Baleswar town under the Mukhyamantri Karma Tatpara Abhiyan (MUKTA) and the construction of the pits where ever made is of poor quality.

The scheme  while  is being implemented  by the self help groups(SHG)s with a motto to conserve rain water, it is alleged  that a few constructions made in the  town  have proved meaningless  and a waste of money. According to reports, in the town areas 310 water reservation pits were to be  made with an expenditure  of Rs 29,100 each. Till date over 130 projects have been  completed. The total project cost for the 310 projects was estimated at Rs 89.90 lakh.

The worrying factor is that within a few months of construction of pits in some places they are  found filled with soil, sand and chips. So, there is no utility of such pits  made a few months ago.

A few of them that are in a shambles are in the Shanti Kanan and in the campus of Shanskruti Bhawan Mallikashpur, the Collectotrate campus, circuit house  and ITI ground etc. It is alleged  that proper identification of sites was not made for construction of the pits. Besides there was not quality check. The intellectuals besides demanding  excavation of those pits filled with soil, also demanded proper inspection of quality of pits by the authorities.
