A 24-year-old man of this town courted trouble as he tried to swindle everyone dramatising a fake loot event.
The accused, identified as Sapan Rout, a resident of Mansingbazar under the Town Police Station, was produced before court after being booked under Sections 120(b), 406, 408, 381 and 201 of IPC by the Sahadevkhunta police and later sent to jail after rejection of his bail petition.
Rout was working as an accountant at a private collection counter of lIC near Station Square. There was a collection of premiums of customers amounting to about Rs 4.20 lakh.
Overtaken by greed, he faked an incident of loot of cash when other staffs had gone for lunch. After returning from lunch, a staff found him in an unconscious state, which he had pretended.
Rout misled the staffs by stating that two miscreants after coming to the counter initially asked about some policies and subsequently threatened him in at gunpoint and beat him and looted all the cash available in the counter.
Development Officer Pradipta Kishor Sahu, who ran the counter, lodged an FIR with police. The police during investigation suspected the role of Rout, and after a sustained interrogation, he confessed that he engineered the plan of loot and handed over the cash to one of his friends in a packet. He had told his friend that he would take the packet back later without telling him that it contained cash.
The police raided the house of the receiver of the packet, found it intact and recovered the cash. “The cash is recovered fully,” Sahadevkhunta PS IIC Paresh Rout said.
