'Back-to-back low pressure likely this week'

Moderate rainfall is expected in many places as a low pressure area (lOPAR) is likely to form on Friday over the northwest Bay of Bengal off the Odisha coast to be followed by the development of another system in the same area within a week, the Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) at the SOA University said on Thursday.

The lOPAR, expected on Saturday, would cause moderate rainfall at many places with heavy rainfall at a few locations till July 18, CEC Director Dr SC Sahu said.

The pressure along and off the coast being less than 1,000 hpa, it may support formation of low pressure till July 18, but it would not cause widespread moderate to heavy rainfall. So, the 26-per cent deficit in rainfall would not be compensated till July 18, he said.

“Formation of another low pressure is likely on July 19 over the northwest Bay of Bengal which may cause moderate to heavy rainfall at many locations in north Odisha districts up to July 22,” he said, adding that precipitation would be light to moderate in the State’s southern districts.
