PNS

The three-month-old baby elephant, which was rescued from the Rampur Forest Division in Kalahandi district by the Forest Department on January 20, is recovering fast following treatment at the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) here.

Born on January 10 this year, the elephant calf was found abandoned by the herd for some unknown reason. As the new born baby could not get milk from her mother, she was suffering from malnutrition.

Initially, it was shifted to the Nandankanan Zoological Park where she was nurtured. It was later brought to the OUAT for treatment of diarrhea last month. Following treatment and proper care, the baby elephant is gaining weight.  However, the little one is leading a lonely life at the campus being cut off from her herd.

The OUAT authorities have made all arrangement at the campus for the baby elephant in view of the heat wave during summer. After getting recovered, there is a need to allow the baby elephant to the forest or the Nandankanan where she would be able to meet her fellow beings to lead a normal life.
