Artha Tatwa (AT) Group chief Pradeep Sethy allegedly attempted to commit suicide late on Saturday night at the Jharpada Special Jail here.

According to reports, Sethy slashed his left wrist with a blunt object at four places. Besides, he also banged his head against a wall.

Initially, Sethy was provided first-aid in the hospital at the jail premises. later, a two-member team of doctors from the Capital Hospital treated him.

The doctors said that the injuries were not so deep and that necessary treatment has been provided to him.

Jharpada Jail Superintendent Rabindranath Swain said, “Pradeep Sethy sustained minor injuries on his wrist, and he has been provided treatment. He has been shifted to jail ward. An additional warder has been deployed to keep a watch on his activities.”

Sethy’s wife visited the jail on Sunday morning to inquire about his health. However, she was not allowed to meet him as public meeting of the inmates is prohibited on holidays.

The DIG (Prisons) rushed to the jail on Sunday to probe into the suicide attempt while Bhubaneswar DCP Satyabrata Bhoi informed that action would be taken against Sethy if a written complaint is filed by the jail authorities.

Sources said Sethy might be under stress as he is behind bars since over three years for duping chit fund investors of crores of rupees. The AT Group is one of the major players in the mega chit fund scam in the State.

Sethy was arrested in March 2013. Notably, attempting suicide is a cognizable offence under Section 309 of IPC.
