Assembly adjourned over rape in moving car

The State Assembly was on Monday adjourned for an hour as Opposition Congress members kept demanding a statement from Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on the alleged rape of a college girl in a moving car on the Cuttack-Bhubaneswar road six days back.

The incident was published in an Odia daily on March 26.

Opposition Chief Whip Tara Prasad Bahinipati raised the issue in the House during Zero Hour. Showing a copy of the vernacular daily, Bahinipati said he believes the news report as true as concerned police had told the paper that investigation was on into the matter.

“The paper belongs to the very senior MP and spokesperson of the ruling BJD. The matter is serious. Such an incident occurred in Delhi three years back had created resentments among people across the Country,” Bahinipati said.

Alleging that no action has been taken against the anti-socials so far, he urged Deputy Speaker Sananda Marandi to direct the CM to give a statement in the House.

As Marandi didn’t respond and allowed BJP MlA KV Singh Deo to speak, Congress members rushed into the Well of the House and created hullaballoo demanding statement from the CM.

Singh Deo could not speak his issue on admission of Adarsha Vidyalayas due to the ruckus. Unable to run, Marandi adjourned the House for one hour at 11.44.

However, normalcy returned when the House reassembled at 12.44 pm.
