ASI queries on Shreemandir safety norms

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has sought replies from the Odisha Bridge Construction Corporation (OBCC) over the ongoing works for the heritage corridor near the Jagannath Temple here.

The letter of the ASI came over alleged violation of laws by the Tata Company under the OBCC’s guidance.

“We have forwarded a letter with note sheet of DG to the OBCC mentioning our grave concern. In February, we had already sent show cause notice to the OBCC and district administration for working within 100-meter restricted zone of the shrine,” said ASI Odisha head Arun Mallick on Wednesday.

Mallick said the construction is strictly prohibited within 100-meter with next 200-meter-radius of the temple allowing only regulated works for sake of public amenities.

However, district Collector Samarth Verma had earlier said in a Press meet that they have already received an NOC from the ASI before works, triggering a row in the city.

Meanwhile, works are on a war footing near the West and South
Gates of the temple. Digging of ground and erection of concrete pillars are being undertaken for development of amenities like cloak room, reception centre, convention building, shoe stands, urinals, etc., surrounding the temple. The multi-crore project is scheduled to be completed before the 2023 Rath Yatra.
