Yet another elephant in the State died allegedly due to delay in treatment. The incident was reported from the Tikarpada Forest Range under the Satkosia Wildlife Division in Angul district.
Sources said the five-year-old tusker was ailing for the last 10 days. Though the Forest Department had spotted the calf, it failed to provide treatment as it was surrounded by a herd of elephants. Its treatment began on Monday, but the animal died late in the night
However, the exact cause behind the elephant’s deaths would be ascertained once its postmortem report comes in, said Satokosia Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Saroj Panda.
Earlier on June 24, forest officials had exhumed a carcass of an elephant from the Jilinda Range of the Satkosia Wildlife Division and arrested three poachers in this connection.
Meanwhile, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change has on June 15 sought an action-taken report from the Odisha Forest Department regarding the incident in which a male elephant was found injured with gunshots in the Athagarh Forest Division of Cuttack district.
