Activist decries chit fund accused in police lockup

RTI activist Jayanta Kumar Das on Sunday said the CBI lodging the chit fund accused in city police lockups at night may create problem in the grilling process.

Notably, he pointed finger at a few chit fund accused who are being lodged at the Nayapalli police station and the Mahila police station in the city at night after their interrogation. Das said the CBI on December 18 last year had requested the State Chief Secretary to direct the city Commissioner of the Police to allow safe custody of the accused persons taken on remand by the CBI in the police lockup especially at night.

"If the CBI lodges chit fund accused in the police station lockups, the accused persons may disclose the details of the interrogation to their well-wishers and relatives which may create disturbances in the interrogation process," Das said and added that the accused might try to help other possible accused to destroy evidences against the latter. The RTI activist also raised questions about security of the accused in police lockups.

"Whereas the police don't keep the arrested persons in lockups for more time than permissible and forward them immediately due to lack of space in the police station, how the same police are allowing the chit fund accused to be kept in the lockups," he asked, adding that it might also create space problem. He said that the same CBI officials had arrested and interrogated many influential people like BJD MP Ramachandra Hansdah, BJD MlA Pravat Tripathy, former BJD MlA Subarna Nayak, former BJP MlA Hitesh Bagarti, AT Group chief Pradeep Sethy and Seashore Group chief Prashant Dash. These accused were not kept in police lockups. What happened to the same officials that they are now keeping the other accused in the local police stationsIJ
