The Special Task Force (STF) of the Crime Branch on Sunday seized 693 kg of ganja near the Guhuriaghat-Brahmani road under the Tarava police station in Subarnapur district and arrested two persons in this connection. The contraband smugglers were identified as Purnananda Mandili and Biswanath Karna.
On the basis of intelligence input, a raid was conducted by a team of the STF with the help of the Sonepur police and the contraband was seized. A case in this connection has been registered in the Tarava police station under the relevant sections of the NDPS Act.
The district police in the last two years have seized more than 60 quintals of ganja and also confiscated 20 luxury cars. But a matter of concern is according to the statistics available with the police, 94 per cent of the accused held in robbery cases in the district were found to be ganja smugglers. Besides, contraband smugglers from other States are using the local youths as conduits.
