As many as 4,953 people have died in road accidents in the State during last 13 months, informed Transport Minister Dr Nrusingha Charan Sahoo in the Statae Assembly in response to a question by Congress MLA Chandra Sekhar Majhi on Friday.
According to the Minister’s information, a total of 10,961 accidents occurred since July 2017 in which 4,953 people were killed, 6,139 severely injured and 4,913 received minor injuries.
The Minister informed that Rs 2.06 crore was collected from bikers for driving without helmets in 2017-18 and Rs 1.2 crore collected this year so far.
In response to a related question of MLA Sanatan Mahakud, the Minister informed inspections are being conducted to check speed driving and riding without helmet and awareness programmes are being held to check accidents.
