As many as 300 Surat returnees of Odisha jumped off a Shramik Special train near the Kantabanji railway station in Balangir district by pulling alarm chain on Monday.

But they were detained by the Government Railway Police (GRP) before they could flee from the place.

According to reports, the train carrying the migrant workers from Surat in Gujarat to Nirgundi in Cuttack district halted near the Kantabanji station though there was no scheduled stoppage.

The 305 workers from Nuapada, Kalahandi and Balangir districts, who got down from the train, were served food at the railway station.

Though the migrants refuted the allegation of chain pulling and said that they alighted from the train as it stopped, the Kantabanji Railway Station Manager said the chain was pulled, for which the train halted. The returnees would be sent to their respective native places by buses.

Notably, this was second incident of its kind within 24 hours as more than 200 migrants had escaped from a Shramik Special Train in Ganjam district on Sunday by pulling the alarm chain.
