Even as the Commissionerate police on Sunday succeeded in arresting three accused persons for misbehaving with three girls near Nandankanan on the outskirts of the capital city within 36 hours of the incident, Commissioner of Police YB Khurania said efforts would be taken to improve police response time to reach the crime spot.
“So far, three youths, Madhab Kumar Rout (22), Mrutyunjay Patra (22) and Biswaranjan Pradhan (21), have been nabbed by the Nandankanan police on the charges of stalking, eve teasing and showing dirty gestures to the girls. Hunt is on to nab others,” Khurania told reporters here.
Responding to the allegations of the victim girls about the delayed police response, Khurania said the PCR (Police Control Room) was informed by the victims at 3.24 pm on Friday and the police reached the spot at 3.40 pm.
“At 3.48 pm, the PCR in-Charge informed about the incident to the modern control room. later at 4.10 pm, an FIR was lodged by the victims,” clarified Khurania.
He, however, asserted that measures would be taken to improve police response time further.
He informed that the investigating officer would pray the court for a test identification (TI) parade of the accused as the male friend of the victim girls lodged the FIR against unknown persons.
It may be recalled that on Friday afternoon, some bike-borne youths passed lewd remarks at the three girls who were chitchatting with their male friend near Magnet Square along the Patia-Nandankanan Road. Following the incident, the girls along with their male friend chased the eve teasers.
Though the miscreants fled the spot, some other youths believed to be their friends numbering around 10, suddenly appeared on the scene and abused the girls in filthy language. later, they allegedly assaulted the girls and their male friend in the middle of the road.
The girls alleged that while all this was happening in public glare, the onlookers remained mute spectators to the shameful incident. They further alleged that despite contacting the police control room (PCR), the cops reached almost after 40 minutes when the attackers had fled the spot.
