Work on the proposed second spillway in the Hirakud Dam would begin from October and end in nine months, Water Resources Principal Secretary Pradeep Kumar Jena said here on Thursday.

Jena said this after reviewing various ongoing projects in Sambalpur district in the presence of MlA Dr Raseswari Panigrhi. Department’s Chief Engineer Janaki Ballav Mohapatra and other dam officials were present.

“The required talks were held today. Japanese technology will be used to build the second spillway so that no one’s house is damaged,” said Jena.

He also reviewed the progress of the work on the drainage system at Binakandi for release of excess rainwater in the city.

The construction of the spillways, being constructed on both sides of the dam, is being funded by the World Bank. While one spillway is targeted to discharge 3 lakh cusecs of water per second, the other set to discharge of 4 lakh cusecs of water.

While the dam earlier had provision of gross discharge of 15 lakh cusecs of water, provision for release of 24 lakh cusecs of water has been planned considering the present situation and future of the dam.

Besides, Jena directed the Chief Engineer to complete the under-construction rind road by December-end.
