To facilitate admission of more students, the State Government has decided to create additional seats up to 20 per cent over and above the sanctioned strength, allowing admission of local students in +2 and +3 colleges in rural areas from the current academic session 2014-15.
However, the Higher Education Department has stipulated certain guidelines for the colleges seeking creation of additional seats. One of the conditions is that the college authorities have to give an undertaking to the effect that they will manage the additional intake with their existing facilities and will not demand any additional aid from the Government.
“The admission for the local seats shall be completed in all respects at respective colleges within 20 days from the last date of the vacant seat admission process, which will be notified very shortly. Accordingly, the respective colleges will schedule the admission process suiting their convenience,” said a Higher Education Department letter to the Regional Directors of Bhubaneswar, Sambalpur and Brahmapur.
Besides, the additional seats to be created for the local students cannot be filled up by transfer admission, and only fresh admission cases would be entertained.
“The applicant must not have taken admission anywhere during the normal period of e-admission, i.e, from the first selection through vacant seat admission in any SAMS college.
Only in the colleges located in rural/Block/NAC areas and having no vacancies out of the normal sanctioned strength, local students will be accommodated against the additional seats to be created 20% over and above sanctioned strength wherever there is necessary,” said the letter.
The Government colleges in urban areas under the jurisdiction of municipal corporations or municipalities would not come under this category. The self-financing colleges can create additional seats for local students, sources in the department said.
