‘No decision to award liquor sellers’

PNS

Finance and Excise Minister Niranjan Pujari on Monday told the State Assembly that the State Government has not taken any decision to introduce any award system to increase liquor sale in the State.

Replying to a question of BJP MLA Mohan Charan Majhi and additional questions of other members, the Minister, however, pointed out that an Assembly Standing Committee has made a recommendation in this regard.

He said the State Excise Policy is aimed at countering the harmful use of the liquor. Government ensures the availability of qualitative and safe liquor at reasonable price through licensed outlets to the consumers. Expressing concern that accidents are rising in the State due to consumption of liquor, members suggested checking illegal sale of liquor and liquor consumption as well. “The Excise Model Act and Rules 2005 of the Centre is in force in the State now. Accordingly, liquor is being sold in licensed outlets. Raids are being conducted to check illegal sale of liquor,” said the Minister.

To a suggestion of BJD MLA Soumya Ranjan Patnaik for introduction of a woman-friendly excise policy, the Minster said the Government would undertake more awareness programmes through advertisements and other modes to curb consumption of liquor.  Patnaik said women oppose the proliferation of liquor trade as it creates health problems in people habituated with drinking and disturbs peace and economy of family. Thus, the Government should conduct a cost-benefit analysis by an independent agency and formulate excise policy accordingly.
