‘New tech use must for pollution control’

With the industrial system undergoing a change now, a need is felt to address the industrial safety and to control pollution through recovery, reuse and recycle, viewed Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) Chief Engineer Dr Nihar Ranjan Sahoo.

Sahoo further suggested that cyclical systems should be adopted instead of linear systems. “There are ways of new technological instruments like grave to cradle, physical to biological, cradle to cradle and above all from doing things right to doing right things,” Sahoo said at the Pollution Prevention Day held here on Sunday by the Odisha Environment Society (OES).

The day is observed all over the country to commomorate the Bhopal gas tragedy that happened on December 2, 1984 killing more than 15,000 people and leaving 5,58,125 injured.

The catastrophic Bhopal Gas Tragedy considered as the World's worst industrial accidents due to the leakage of harmful Methyle Isocyanate (MIC) gas from the Union Carbide pesticide plant near Bhopal.

OES president Dr SN Patro said, “ As we are shifting from agricultural and forest-based economy to industrial economy, we need to be cautious about the transformation and its possible impact on environment.”

At the outset, Dr LAK Singh had delivered welcome address and OES Secretary Dr JK Panigrahi an introductory speech on the theme, "Our role in making our environment pollution-free". The rogramme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Prof BS Patro.

Experts from different fields took part in the discussion.
