Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC) on Monday launched a ‘Zero Bill’ policy ensuring free treatment for the poor and emergency patients.
The scheme covers all medical services—registration, tests, surgeries—for Below Poverty Line (BPL) cardholders and financially destitute individuals without exception or delay.
Dr Manisha Srivastava, Acting Director, issued the order after Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) approval. The policy aims to relieve thousands unable to afford basic healthcare.
Previously, BPL patients paid a token registration fee and bore costs for tests and procedures. Now, no charges will apply at any stage of treatment.
For patients without BPL cards but in visible financial distress, a new Medical Social Welfare Unit will assess eligibility and connect them to government health schemes.
Emergency care is guaranteed. All patients arriving in critical condition will receive free services for the first 24 hours regardless of identity or documentation.
To fund the initiative, a Patient Welfare Fund will be established and supported by CSR contributions, public donations and charitable sources solely for treatment of the needy.
