World's biggest solar plant on track in Gurh

Staff Reporter

World's biggest ultra mega solar power plant of 750 MW capacity is being set up in Gurh tehsil of Rewa district. Solar power plant’s social and environmental evaluation has begun.

A team led by expert consultant appointed for environmental and social evaluation had already visited the project site from November 19 to 21. Members of the team also held one-to-one discussions with villagers and sought feedback on social impact of the project on them. The team found that proper place has been selected for the project. The report will be submitted in 2 months.

It is noteworthy that the project is being set up by Rewa Ultra Mega Solar (RUMS) a joint venture company of Madhya Pradesh Energy Development Corporation and Solar Energy Corporation of India. Government land for the project has been allotted and acquired. The State Government is acquiring private land for the project through mutual consent.

The plant is expected to start generating solar energy by March 2017. The project will come up on barren Government land as one MW power generation needs two hectares tract of land. The cost of generating one MW solar energy comes to around `7.6 crore.

At present, world’s largest solar power project - Ivanpah Solar Power Facility of 392 MW — is at Mojave deserts in California, United States.

In February last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while he was BJP’s prime ministerial candidate inaugurated Asia’s largest solar power project at Neemuch. As per reports, Welspun’s solar power project in Neemuch, some 400 km from here, had come up at a cost of around `1,100 crore on 305 hectares of land.
