Chairman, MP Committee, PHD Chamber of Commerce said that the exponential growth in the chemical industries has laid to the release of huge quantity of wastes, potentially hazardous to the environment and the living organism including humans. Discriminating disposal of such wastes on land and water bodies have lead to the contamination of surface and ground water supply due to chemicals leaching out of the wastes, dump sites posing potential risk to human health. This has trigged the mechanism to establish a system for safe disposal of such wastes.

He was speaking at the concluding day on the three-day workshop on ‘Hazardous Waste Management’ organised by PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry in association with Ministry of Environment Forest, at GEI Conventional Hall, Govindpura Industries Association, Govindpura, Bhopal.

lakshmi Raghupathy, Former Director, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in her address on Trans boundary Movement of Hazardous Waste for Recycling briefed the participants on Conditions for transboundary movements where parties are under an obligation to take the appropriate measures to ensure that TBM of hazardous wastes and other wastes are only allowed if one of the three following conditions is met such as a) the State of export does not have the technical capacity and the necessary facilities, capacity or suitable disposal sites in order to dispose of the wastes in question in an “environmentally sound manner”; or the wastes in question are required as raw material for recycling or recovery industries in the State of import; or the TBM in question is in accordance with other criteria decided by the Parties.

P Nagesh Sr Environmental Engineer, Central Pollution Control Board, stressed on incineration and hazardous waste utilization in cement plant that most of the countries have guidelines to comply with the requirements for co-processing of waste in cement plant but in India there is a slow progress in incineration.

He emphasized that there should be more effective enforcement of incineration to conserve our natural resources and monitoring mechanism needs to be evolved. He further said that best option is minimizing waste generation and if generation is inevitable reuse, recycle and recover should be the mantra.
