The police team checked the call details of Rajesh which showed his location in the Mianwala area on the outskirts of Dehradun city. The police team investigating the case got suspicious of the activities and contradicting statements being made by Dipika. The police soon found out that that she had a strained relationship with her husband who was also the father of their six-year old child. The police also found out that she had become close to one Yogesh Arora who used to live in a rented house in Tapovan colony near Nanoorkheda where the Ranas resided. The two were in a relationship and Dipika had even given financial assistance to Yogesh to start a restaurant. The police team using methods of criminal psychology interrogated Dipika as her role was under suspicion. She broke down and confessed to her involvement in the heinous crime. Dipika told the police that on the intervening night of  Friday and Saturday when her husband and father in-law were fast asleep, she opened the door of the house for Yogesh and his two friends. The culprits strangulated Rajesh and his father using a nylon rope. The accused even slit their throats to ensure that they were dead. Dipika told the police that the head of dead were wrapped in plastic bags to prevent blood from spilling out. After committing the crime the murderers wrapped the bodies in blankets and placed them in the car of Ranas. The body of Rajesh was folded in to boot of the car while body of Prem Singh was put on the back seat. The culprits then cleaned the scene of crime and tried to dispose off the bodies.  Based on the confession of Dipika the police then located Yogesh from Govindgarh area. He also confessed to his involvement in the double-murder. He told the police that after disposing of the materials used in the murder in the wooded area in ladpur he drove the car carrying the dead bodies of Rajesh and his father to Kuwawala and tried to set the car on fire. He doused the car with petrol and set it on fire but in this attempt his hands and face were scalded. Yogesh disclosed that  two professional criminals of western Uttar Pradesh used to frequent his restaurant and they demanded a sum of Rs five lakh for killing Rajesh and his father.
