A painting exhibition ‘Rangat’ by the tribal artists of the State is being put up at Rangdarshini Gallery, Bharat Bhavan. The exhibition is being organised under Roopankar Fine Arts Museum. Begun on July 16, the exhibition would be on view till July 31.

The tribes like Gond, Baiga and Bhil of Madhya Pradesh have displayed their latest works at the gallery. These paintings are the collection of Folk and Tribal Art collection of Bharat Bhavan. While talking to The Pioneer, the in-charge of the gallery Suresh Yadav said, “The tribal artists have created these paintings in a special workshop organised for them last year by Roopankar Fine Art Museum. There is a tremendously wonderful combination of years’ old tradition carved in new form over canvas.” This was a learning experience for the tribal artists as many of them attended the workshop to bring out the art from the walls of their houses on the canvas, he added.

There are around 22 paintings being on display at the gallery. The tribals live with their tradition and define it in their creativity. One of the paintings, ‘Riders on Elephant’ belongs to these genres. The painting is all about a hunting scene in the forest where the tribal men are riding the elephants to hunt the animals and save themselves from the attacks. The dancing peacocks, hunters, daily life style of the tribals and anonymous creatures on the colourful walls of the canvas, define the creativity of the tribal artists fantastically.

All the paintings have distinctive features portraying the scenes, birds, animals and human faces in dark and vibrant colours. The paintings have brown or black base. The fine lines and geometrical figures painted in red, blue and white acrylic and oil colours make them look more appealing to the eyes. The spectators could witness the traditional folk art of different tribes under one roof. The exhibition is like a treat for the artists as well as the art lovers.
