Securing tricolour a tough task for Govt

Staff Reporter

The Government officials find it a difficult task to maintain the second largest tricolour of the country, unfurled in Bhopal on May 27. The flag has been damaged four times, but every time it is hoisted, it gets damaged.

The flag got torn within four hours of hoisting. However, as per the experiences of other sites where similar flags are hoisted, it was expected that it will remain intact for at least four months. In the present situation, the officials are frequently visiting Delhi and Mumbai to find the solution.

On May 27, second largest tricolour of the country was hoisted in the Vallabh Bhai Patel Park, in front of the State Mantralaya. The objective behind hoisting this big size national flag was to organise a ‘beating retreat’ ceremony on every Saturday on the lines of Wagah border. However, tearing of the flag changed every equation.

The flag was sent to Mumbai by plane for stitching. But, it was replaced with a new flag. On the next day, the flag again got torn, after which it was sent to Mumbai by road. The Flag Corporation Company of Mumbai is unable to find out the reasons as why the flag was getting torn every time.

Notably, to ensure security of the flag and to prevent it from dangers, five police personnel have been deployed at the site. The security official of the park said that the flag was hoisted at 2 pm and it got torn at 6 pm. Immediately, the employees of Bajaj Company were called. At present both the flags are getting repaired in Mumbai.

Gyan Shah of the Flag Corporation Company that maintains the big size flags in different parts of the country said that there 15 such flags in the country, and only in Bhopal, there are complaints of the flag getting torn.

The largest tricolor of the country, measuring 64 by 96 feet, is placed in Faridabad. However, it remains intact for at least a month. “When we received the order, we were unaware of the place where it was to be hoisted. However, the flag is manufactured from the best quality polyester,” he added.

Two suggestions are put forward as solution to this problem. The first suggestion is to manufacture a heavier flag. However, under such condition it will be unable to be unfurled. The second suggestion is to come out with a lighter flag. Again, under such condition the flag will get torn more quickly.
