Sectarian violence in walled city as admin exposes inefficiency

Staff Reporter

The communal clashes occurred at several places of the walled city on Tuesday exposing the administration and police for not taking the situation seriously and not acting swiftly on time.

The police and administration were well aware of the situation right from the morning and messages from both the communities were doing rounds on whatsapp. However, the police and administration officials only limited themselves with meeting people of the communities and did not invite the Rapid Action Force (RPF) in time.

If the RPF was invited early in the evening, the situation could have been controlled without any problem, before it could take a bad shape. Finally, it was only RPF that was deployed at midnight and the situation was controlled.

On Wednesday, the police have arrested more than 100 people for their involvement in arson and vandalism after two groups clashed in Bhopal.

The communal fabric was disturbed in the night after rioters damaged property and resorted to stone pelting and arsoning several vehicles.

The circulation of appeals made over social media spread making the situation worse.

While talking to media persons, Superintendent of Police (North) Bhopal Arvind Saxena said that 106 persons have been arrested who were involved in creating ruckus in the night on Tuesday. More than 2500 police personnel were deployed to control the situation.

The negligence led to worsening the situation out of proportion which created havoc in the night on Tuesday.

The fight between the two groups led to tension that started at the Peer Gate late on Tuesday night and spread to other parts of the old city. Property was damaged and cars were set on fire. The situation turned violent after 8.30 pm when the two groups resorting to stone pelting on each other.

Senior officials pacified and make peace by talking with the two groups and were able to control the situation at around 12.30 after the night.

For the past four days the situation was tense and on Tuesday the situation was blown out of proportion after appeal was made to gather at the disputed site inside Hamidia campus and protest in favour of their group.
