Sadhus of Ujjain to add a twist to Holi this year

PNS

Holi is a festival of colours but akharas in Simhastha bound Ujjain have decided to play Holi in one of the most unique ways of playing Holi. Sadhus (priests) of all 13 akharas in Ujjain are preparing to play Holi tossing cow dung and cow urine at each other. The unique way of playing Holi will be adopted to spread the importance of cow in the Indian culture.

Keeping aside their rivalries, members of Shiva, Vaishnava and Udasin akharas will join hands together to mark the Holi festival. They will be playing Holi on Thursday March 24 at the premises of the Juna akhara where saints will throw cow dung and urine on each other. Elderly saints will apply tilak on foreheads of the believers.

“This is a part of our tradition to play Holi with cow dung and urine which we have been following since ages,” said Akhil Bhartiya Akhara Parishad chief Narendra Giri.

Talking about the importance of cow in Indian culture, Digvijay Das of Nirvani Ani akhara said, “Cow-dung is pure and has no side effects on the skin unlike colours made from chemicals. Besides this we would also like to make people aware about the importance of cow in our culture and benefits of cow dung.”

The Holi festival will start in the morning at the premises of the Juna akhara followed by snacks and thandai, a traditional drink consumed on the festival.

After playing Holi with cow dung and urine, another session will be held in the evening where saints will shower flowers and sandal powder on each other.
