RTI activist demands transparency in lokayukta appointment

Staff Reporter

Right To Information (RTI) activist Ajay Dubey has urged the State Government to start transparent procedure for the appointment of new lokayukta in the State besides the unreliable and minion lokayukta who has been given an extension by the State Government to step down.

Notably, Madhya Pradesh lokayukta justice (retired) PP Naolekar’s term was supposed to expire on June 28 but the State Government provided him extension by amending the act made for appointment of lokayukta.

Dubey, while addressing media persons here on Saturday, said, “The tenure of lokayukta Justice (retired) Naolekar is coming to an end on June 28, but the corrupt Shivraj Singh Chouhan Government of the State did not initiate the procedure for appointment of new lokayukta and is providing chance to incumbent lokayukta to continue in office on contract basis, that is a dangerous trend for the democracy.”

Dubey further said that we fear that the temporary and minion lokayukta would not be able to conduct enquiry against the State Government. The post of deputy lokayukta is also lying vacant in the State since February 1 this year due to that the agency meant to do enquiry of Madhya Pradesh Government’s corruption has become meaningless, he added.

He said that the appointment of Justice Naolekar was done in a week in the year 2009, at that time Chief Minister Chouhan who was an accused in a FIR related to the dumper case talked to the then Chief Justice Patnayak on telephone and on the basis of that Patnayak wrote a letter to Chouhan on June 18, 2009 in that he considered Naolekar the best among other eligible persons, unfortunately who those others were not mentioned in the letter.

The RTI activist sought reply from the chief minister that who is stopping him from searching for the best eligible person for the lokayukta. Why he is providing contractual appointment to the incumbent lokayukta after his retirement. “Anyways we have written a letter to chief justice of Madhya Court on June 6 and awaiting action over that,” he added.
