The Bhopalites would experience the longest day of the year and the shortest shadow effect in the city on Friday. This is the important day of the year that occurs on June 21 each year. To mark the uniqueness of this day, Regional Science Centre, Bhopal would organise a short experiment at its premises.

The visitors could have a close look of the zero shadow or minimum shadow during 10:30 am to 12:30 at noon. While talking to The Pioneer, Education Officer of Regional Science Centre Charuatta Pulliwar said, “This day is basically known as Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. The Earth marks the most northerly position at which the Sun may appear directly overhead at its zenith. This event occurs once in a year, at the time of the June solstice, when the Northern Hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun to its maximum extent.”

To explain this further and to enjoy this day’s uniqueness a plastic cylinder would be hanged with the help of the support and during the June Solstice, which is when the sun would be exactly overhead one could see no shadow or the minimum shadow of the cylinder. Elaborating further, Pulliwar explained that Bhopal is one of those cities of the country that have the northern June solstice as the tropic of cancer passes through Madhya Pradesh and Bhopal is very near to it as well. Other cities include Gujarat, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura and Mizoram.

On Friday, the sun would rise at 5.35 am and would set at 7.09 pm in Bhopal. The day duration in the city will be 13 hrs 34 minutes and 9 seconds which is the maximum time in a year. It’s a longest day of the year as far as North Hemisphere is concerned, Pulliwar added. Further, shortest shadow effect could also be clearly observed on this day. Pulliwar further said that maximum participation is urged by the Bhopalites to experience the once in a lifetime event.
