PMT scam: MPHRC criticises detention of students

Staff Reporter

Detention of suspected students from across the State in the PMT examination scam by the Special Task Force (STF), at three police stations of the State capital has attracted strong criticism from the Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission (MPHRC) and Madhya Pradesh State Woman Commission. Taking cognisance of the news of detention of suspected student in inhumane conditions by cramming in the lockup rooms, acting chairperson of Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission AK Saxena has sought reply from Registrar (law) HK Dube, Addl DG of STF and DIG Bhopal within one week.

Notably, the district police had detained around 200 students on Thursday but STF did not have enough and appropriate space for detention.

The Mahila police station was packed with girl students, in lock ups and outside. They were compelled to use their stoles for sleeping on the floor. Due to the scarcity of space, the girl students faced great difficulty and later the Mahila police station was locked for other complainants, which raised problems for complainants who visited to lodge complaint and were told that police station has to be locked as per STF instructions.

later, when Addl DG Aruna Mohan Rao got the information about the locked police station, she telephoned the police officials and instructed to open the locks immediately.

Around two dozen girl students were forcefully detained in small rooms, no arrangement of food was made for them and there was no sitting arrangement due to which they were forced to sit on the floor.
